 SPIRE

NHSScotland is improving the way it uses information from GP patient records. SPIRE is a service that will allow small amounts of information from GP practice records to be used to help doctors’ surgeries, NHSScotland and the Scottish Government to improve care and plan services, and to help researchers to learn more from patient information held at GP practices.

A new campaign is underway to inform patients across Scotland of the benefits of the service, and the confidential and secure way in which GP patient records will be used to help plan and improve health care services.

You have a choice about your patient record being used in this way. To find out more go to spire.scot

Important update

It has been announced by the UK/Scottish Government that as of 16 March anyone developing symptoms consistent with COVID-19, however mild, should stay at home for 7 days from the onset of symptoms as per existing advice.  In addition, it is now recommended that anyone living in the same household as a symptomatic person should self-isolate for 14 days after the first household member first gets symptoms.

The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are recent onset of:

  • new continuous cough and/or
  • high temperature

Information for the public on COVID-19, including stay at home advice for people who are self-isolating, can be found on NHS Inform.

Further, people are advised to take social distancing measures to help reduce the transmission of COVID-19. In particular, this is strongly advised for people aged 70 or over, people with underlying medical conditions and pregnant women. Further advice on these measures will be available on NHS Inform shortly.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) helpline

If you do not have symptoms and are looking for general information, a free helpline has been set up on: 0800 028 2816.

The helpline is open:

  • Monday to Friday, 8.00am to 10.00pm
  • Saturday and Sunday, 9.00am to 5.00pm

Anyone who is symptomatic (cough, fever or breathless) should now self-isolate for a minimum of 7 days. Self-isolation can stop from day 8 after onset, if symptoms are improving, and they have had two days without fever. They can return to work and daily life if they still have a cough, if that is the sole symptom.

If symptoms worsen during home isolation or they are no better after 7 days then you should phone NHS 24 on  (111).

From Monday 23 March from 0800 onwards, patients who are unwell and worried about COVID-19 are to consult NHS inform and phone NHS 24 111 as the first point of contact, NOT THEIR GP.

Please do not be offended when our patient care advisers ask you for a brief description about why you are contacting the practice. This helps us to navigate your care. They are able to help you access the most appropriate person at the most appropriate time all information remains entirely confidential.
